Vayanattu Kulavan is one of the main worship idols among the thiyya community in northern Malabar, especially in the Kannur and Kasargod districts of Kerala. This theyya form also has places of worships in ancestral homes of other communities like nair and nambiar.
Vayanattu Kulavan is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva, known for his fierce and powerful presence. This Theyyam is often performed in temples and sacred groves, where the deity is invoked through elaborate rituals and dance. The Theyyam is characterized by vibrant costumes, intricate makeup, and energetic dance movements.
The term ‘Kulavan’ indicates leader or the ‘ head of a group’. People belonging to the thiyya community usually call this deity as ’Thondacchan’ Theyyam.
“Thondachan” is a term used to refer to ancestors or prominent individuals in a family or community, who belong to the same lineage or caste. It is a form of ancestral worship prevalent in Kolathunadu. The term is commonly associated with certain individuals who are remembered as “Thondachan” in general parlance.
One such revered figure in Thiyya community is the Vayanattukulavan Theyyam, who is known as the Thondachan of the Vayanattukulam family. Another example is Ponnann Thondachan (of Vaniyar community).
Vayanattu Kulavan is said to possesses the power to heal ailments, bring prosperity, and protect against evil forces.
It is believed that this Theyam, who is an old person with a blurred vision, is the God who will answer the call of his devotees. People from various communities and backgrounds come to seek blessings from this deity during festivals and special occasions.
