Unnakai / Unnakaya is a sweet dish of which the major ingredient is Plantain/Banana.
Unnakaya contains the following ingredients : Banana, grated coconut, cardamom, raisins, sugar, ghee and coconut oil.
The banana is cut into two pieces and steamed for 10-15 minutes. Peel off and mash the banana once it is cooled. Melt ghee and fry raisins and nuts for a minute in a separate pan. Toss thoroughly after adding the coconut. Add sugar and cardamom powder. Mix thoroughly until the sugar starts to melt. Move it into a bowl and let it cool.
Flatten the banana dough and add one spoonful of the coconut mixture. Cover and seal it well. Deep-fry in oil till it turns a golden brown color. Drain the oil and serve. Come to Kannur and try Unnakai! After the first bite, it literally melts in your mouth.
