Puthiya Bhagavity is a theyya kolam worshiped as the main deity at many major shrines in Kannur. The deity originated from a sacrificial fire ( homa kunda ) when the rishis performed a ‘homa’ ritual to cure smallpox.
It is believed that the goddess emerged from the fire ember of homa kunda, which was conducted upon the order of lord Shiva.
The fatal disease smallpox was spreading out like wildfire and many members on earth were falling ill.
As Puthiya Bhagavati emerged from the homa, everyone narrated the situation to her and provided some offerings. As Puthiya Bhagavathi quenched her thirst, all evil and the chronic disease disappeared.
According to various beliefs, the King of Kolathiri Nadu had a vision of the Puthiya Bhagavati kolam where she wanted her kolam to be performed. The Puthiya Bhagavati kola was then performed by following that vision.
