Payyannur Pavithra Ring: Symbol of Culture & Tradition

The Payyannur Pavithra Ring or the Pavithrakettu is an intricate knot design ring worn on the right-hand ring finger. The word “Pavithra”  means “sacred” in Malayalam. The ring is made with a blend of metals, gold or silver, and it features spirituality.

They are made by skilled artisans in the Payyanur village and are closely related to Payyannur Subramanya Swamy Temple. Earlier Dharba, a kind of grass was used for making this ring. Later after the renovation of the temple, the priest advised the blacksmith to make it using gold.

The three curved lines represent the three nerves Ida, Pingala, and Sushuma nerves of the human body.  As a result, it is believed that wearing this will give the wearer purity, spiritual health, and mental well-being.
