Kinnathappam (steamed plate cake) is a must-try traditional Kannur snack. “Kinnam” indicates the vessel or plate into which it is moved, whereas “appam” refers to the rice cake. It is very smooth and brownish in appearance. Rice cake is made with thick coconut milk and refined with ghee, jaggery flavoring, and cardamom spice.

Kinnathappam is available in different versions: black, brown and white. However the brownish variant is the most popular choice and the commonly sold one. This sweet dish made out of healthy ingredients is mostly preferred as a great option for a quick snack,  and is often served along with the evening tea.
