Bhairavan theyyam is a deity belonging to the panchamoorthy (a group of 5 theyyams). The deity is the ‘bhairava rupa’ of lord Shiva. Brahma once lied to lord shiva that that he had seen the Virat form of Devadidevanam Maheshwaran (lord shiva himself). But when Brahma said he had seen the universal form of lord shiva, which no one had seen before, Parameswara could not bear it.
The enraged Kailasanath cut off one of the four heads of Brahma and threw it away. But the result is the curse of Brahma (brahmahatya shapam), “May you walk in the human world begging for fifteen thousand years” Lord Brahma cursed Rudra. Therefore, ‘Bhairavarupiyam’ Mahadeva wandered through the dirt paths of the human world for thousands of years, wearing a beggar’s bowl, a cape in his hand, and a bowed eye. It is this beggar form workshipped as bhairavan theyyam.
